Higgins holds the school record with 471 career tackles and recorded 151 tackles, five pass breakups and three forced fumbles, as a senior. Higgins was ranked #17 linebacker in the state of Indiana by 247Sports. The three-star prospect from Indianapolis started his collegiate football career with Iowa State Hawkeyes, despite considering offers from top programs like Air Force, Central Michigan, Kent State, Tulane, Western Illinois and Wisconsin.

In his freshman season, Higgins saw action in only six games and recorded only two tackles on the year. The following year as a sophomore, Higgins saw more playing time, as he appeared in all 14 games and tallied five tackles.
