Jay Norvell is a collegiate head coach for the Colorado State Rams in the Mountain West Conference since 2022. Norvell is the program's 24th head coach since he took over the position in December 2021. He was a defensive back for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 1980's, before transitioning into a coach. During his playing career, Norvell earned a selection in the All-Big Ten team for the Hawkeyes in 1985 and also appeared in the Rose Bowl. Norvell began his professional playing career with the Denver Broncos in 1986 and then transferred to the Chicago Bears in 1987. Norvell began coaching as a graduate assistant at Iowa. He coached the Indianapolis Colts and the Oakland Raiders for over six years as the tight ends coach. He helped wide receivers Jerry Rice and Tim Brown to win the Hall of Fame award. Norvell is also an author who published his book called ‘Complete Wide Receiver’ in 2012.

Jay Norvell's head coaching record is 49-46. He coached the Nevada Wolf Pack from 2017 to 2021, achieving a 33-26 record. He has been the head coach at Colorado State since December 2021, with a 16-20 record, as of December 2024.

According to Colorado State's official website, Jay Norvell's hometown is Madison, Wisconsin. Jay Norvell began his collegiate football career as a defensive back at Iowa Hawkeyes from 1982 to 1985. He started his coaching career at his alma mater Iowa in 1986 as a graduate assistant. From 1988 to 2001, Norvell served as an assistant coach in multiple positions for Northern Iowa, Wisconsin, and Iowa State. He then moved to the NFL as an assistant coach with the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders from 2002 to 2003. Returning to college football, he took on his first offensive coordinator role at Nebraska in 2004, where he helped quarterback Zac Taylor win Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Norvell also served as the offensive coordinator at UCLA in 2007. The following year, Norvell was appointed as the assistant offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Oklahoma from 2008 to 2010. Fortunately, he was promoted to the co-offensive coordinator position and wide receivers coach in 2011. He held various assistant coaching positions at Texas and Arizona State, before becoming the head coach at Nevada in 2017. In December 2021, he was appointed as the head coach at Colorado State University, becoming their 24th head coach.
