In December 2016, collegiate football coach Kalani Sitake joined the BYU Cougars. In 2001, Sitake started working as a coach. After a successful managerial career at Southern Utah and Eastern Arizona College, he joined the Utah Utes as defensive coordinator in 2009. He spent the 2015 season as the assistant head coach for the Oregon State Beavers before joining BYU. In 2016, Sitake also made history by being the first Tongan to hold a head coaching position at the collegiate level. Kalani has a record of 72–43 for the BYU Cougars as of August 2025.

Tonga is where Sitake was born. When he was a child, his family moved to Laie, Hawaii, to live in the United States. He attended Kirkwood, Missouri, for his secondary school education. In 1994, Sitake served as a missionary in the California Oakland Mission following his first year at BYU. He graduated from BYU with a bachelor's degree in English.
