Kalani Sitake is a collegiate football coach who signed for the BYU Cougars back in December 2016. He was born in the capital city of Tonga, Nukuʻalofa, and moved to the United States with his family as a child, growing up in both Laie and Kirkwood. He had a collegiate career as a fullback for the BYU Cougars. He was trained under the legendary coach LaVell Edwards from the year 1997 to 2000. Sitake began his coaching career in 2001, and quickly learned the fundamentals of being a successful coach while working under some of the top coaches in the nation. He became the defensive coordinator for the Utah Utes in 2009, as he had a successful managerial career at Eastern Arizona College and Southern Utah. Before committing to BYU, he was the assistant head coach for the Oregon State Beavers for a season in 2015. Sitake created history by becoming the first Tongan to become a head coach at the collegiate level in 2016 as well.
Kalani Sitake has contributed immensely to the BYU Cougars at the collegiate level as their head coach for the past eight years. He helped BYU finish with 11-1 during the 2020 season. They ranked No. 11 nationally, which was the highest rank for the Cougars since 1996. His strategic approach displayed his dominance in the 2020 Boca Raton Bowl, where they beat UCF Knights by a hefty margin of 49-23. That same season, Sitake was ranked in the top 10 NCAA for demonstrating his team’s capabilities in both defense and offense. Sitake led the BYU Cougars to defeat the Colorado Buffaloes 36-14 in the 2024 Alamo Bowl.
