Georgia coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo share a long history after playing together for the Bulldogs during their collegiate careers, the latter as a quarterback and the former as a defensive back.

Bobo returned to Athens in 2022 as an offensive analyst and finally succeeded Todd Monken, who departed for the NFL as the team's offensive coordinator, winning Smart's second consecutive national championship together.

During an interview on the "Five-Star Flex" podcast, Smart told a hilarious story about Bobo putting hot sauce in his drink during his freshman season for the Georgia Bulldogs.

"I was man, I didn't know it was at the time I was a freshman and we were staying in the dorms and all the L LD guys and you carried your tray and you went through the line and I was moping around. I was a freshman he was a little older and we all always got fruit punch and I just remember coming back and getting the fruit punch," Smart said.
"I started drinking everybody started laughing and hit me and I was like oh man, I didn't really want them to know that it affected me so I just took it on down you know and just played like it didn't bother me, I was mad as hell but later on I found out it was him because he was the jokester."

Mike Bobo highlights his relationship with Kirby Smart

During last year's Broyles Award ceremony, Mike Bobo highlighted the depth of his relationship with Kirby Smart.

“We’ve had a great year. I want to say a lot of that is because of our head coach Kirby Smart. I played with Coach Smart,” Bobo said.
“We grew up together in South Georgia. Both our dads were high school coaches. And then to come back and have an opportunity to be there at the University of Georgia with him and under his leadership and the direction he sets every day, it’s been a blessing for me and my family.”

Kirby Smart elevated his former teammate Bobo to the offensive coordinator role in February 2023 after Todd Monken took the Baltimore Ravens job.

Smart's team averaged 41.4 points last season and had one of the best offenses in the country, hitting more than 45 points in six different games.

However, Georgia fans were not too happy with Mike Bobo's playcalling during the Bulldogs' SEC championship game loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, which cost them a place in the college football playoffs last season.

It remains to be seen if Bobo can avenge that criticism and claim a playoff spot this season.
