Kirk Ferentz is the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, in his 26th year for the program, as of 2024. Ferentz began his coaching career as a student assistant at Connecticut in 1977, then worked as the offensive line coordinator and defensive coordinator at Worcester Academy from 1978 to 1979. He became a graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980 and went on to the University of Iowa. Ferentz coached nine seasons at the Iowa program from 1981 to 1989, his main task was coaching the offensive line, under the head coach Hayden Fry. He then returned to college football as head coach at the University of Maine from 1990 to 1992. Ferentz joined the NFL and coached offensive lines for six seasons with the Cleveland Browns and then with the Baltimore Ravens. In 1999, he was appointed as the head coach at Iowa, a position he retains to this day, making him the longest-serving FBS head coach in the United States.
Kirk Ferentz has earned many coaching honors during his career. In 2015, he earned the Eddie Robinson FWAA Coach of the Year award, the Dodd Trophy, and the Woody Hayes Coach of the Year award presented by the Columbus Touchdown Club. The same year, Ferentz was selected as the Big Ten Coach of the Year, including a special award by the Associated Press. Ferentz was chosen for the Big Ten Coach of the Year four times, in 2002, 2004, 2009, and 2015. Ferentz became the only coach after Jo Schembechler to be named Big Ten Coach of the Year more than three times. He was also crowned the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2009 and won the Walter Camp National Coach of the Year in 2002.
