His high school career was marked by remarkable achievements, including rushing for over 2,700 yards and scoring 29 touchdowns during his junior year. In his senior season (2022), he amassed 2,137 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns, earning accolades such as the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Class 5A First-Team All-State recognition and the district MVP award. Before committing to BYU, Martin initially pledged to Stanford but decided to switch schools.

Off the field, LJ Martin comes from an athletic family; both of his parents played sports at Western New Mexico University. His father, John Martin, played basketball while his mother, Genevieve, excelled in softball. Martin is majoring in biomechanics at BYU.

Martin joined BYU in June 2023 and quickly garnered attention during fall camp. In his first season with the Cougars, Martin led the team in rushing with 518 yards on 109 carries, averaging nearly five yards per carry. He scored four rushing touchdowns and showcased versatility by contributing to the passing game as well. His breakout performance came against Arkansas, where he rushed for two touchdowns and helped solidify his role as a starter despite being a true freshman.
