Travis Hunter is making waves with his incredible performance, capped by winning the prestigious Heisman Trophy on Saturday. He became the first athlete to claim the award while playing on both offense and defense in every game of a season.
Hunter's Heisman win is historic for other reasons. He not only achieved what his legendary coach, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, could not during his playing career, but he also became the first Heisman recipient to start his career at an FCS school. Hunter spent his freshman season at Jackson State under Sanders before transferring to Colorado in 2023.
Hunter was also named an Academic All-American, with a 3.798 cumulative GPA at Colorado.
Hunter’s viral highlight reel has college football fans drawing comparisons to Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson. The reel was shared widely on X.
“Travis Hunter looks so much like Justin Jefferson on tape… Uses the hands to sell,” SCOUTD tweeted.
“I got inna whole argument a year ago when I said they were similar,” one fan shared,” a fan added.
The reel also sparked curiosity about Hunter’s speed, with fans speculating about his potential 40-yard dash time. While some doubted he could break 4.4 seconds without intensive training, others were confident in his athleticism.
“Curious what his 40 time will be. He looks smooth, & fast when running,” a fan asked.
“That’s not sub-4.4 speed. He can get there possibly if he trains like a madman,” a fan wrote.
“Trav is absolutely 4.3-4.4 range,” a fan posted.
Another proclaimed, “I called that he is the best receiver in this draft, and his teammate Shedeur is very good too. They are arguably the best duo to come from Colorado in recent memory.”
Travis Hunter’s possible 2025 NFL draft position
According to a Sporting News mock draft, the New England Patriots could select Travis Hunter with the third pick. Known for appreciating versatile players, the Patriots could utilize Hunter’s two-way abilities to address multiple needs.
USA Today’s Christian D’Andrea recently projected Hunter as the first pick, sending him to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Meanwhile, The 33rd Team’s latest mock draft suggests he might fall to the seventh pick, where the New York Jets could select him.
“Another Colorado star lands in the Big Apple as the Jets quickly snatch Travis Hunter up and figure out what to do later," Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team wrote. "Hunter profiles best at cornerback with his ball skills, and the Jets don’t have as pressing of a need for a receiver in the meantime.
"Plus, Sauce Gardner can help Hunter maximize his talent at the position.”
