Luke Altmyer is one of the most coveted quarterbacks in American football currently plying his trade with the Illinois Fighting Illini. He began his high school football career at the Starkville High School where he was rated a unanimous four-star recruit. Luke participated in the Elite 11 which is the nation’s premier quarterback competition. During his varsity years, he was rated as the No.2 overall recruit from the state of Mississippi. As a senior, he threw over 1,653 yards and 16 touchdowns. Luke Altmyer initially committed to Florida State University before announcing his transfer to Ole Miss in 2020.
The former four-star quarterback from Starkville signed with the Rebels over offers from Alabama, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisiana, LSU, Mississippi State, NC State, Oregon, and Wake Forest among others. In his freshman season, Altmyer saw action in five games totalling 192 passing yards and one touchdown in 2021. The following year as a sophomore, Altmyer appeared in four games as a backup and redshirted the season. He mostly played as a reserve during his time and decided to transfer to Illinois to pursue a new opportunity. The Starkville native was announced as the starting quarterback in the 2023 season and started nine games last season. After earning the starting role for Fighting Illini, Altmyer recorded 1,883 passing yards and 13 touchdowns while also rushing for 282 yards in his redshirt sophomore year.
