Mac Markway will not be returning to LSU in the 2024 college football season. The tight end informed LSU coaching staff on Monday night that he is departing Baton Rouge, Brian Kelly told reporters in a news conference on Tuesday.
“He’s made the decision that he’s not going to play," Kelly said. "I don’t know what his plans are, whether he’s going to transfer, but he informed us last night that he was not going to play at LSU anymore.”
Mac Markway practiced with the second team in both the spring and fall camps. He appeared in 12 games in his true freshman season in 2023, recording three receptions for 16 yards and one touchdown.
Markway announced that he is entering the transfer portal.
Here's a look at five transfer portal options for the tight end.
Top 5 landing spots for Mac Markway after leaving LSU
#1, Colorado
Colorado has been one of the most active teams in the transfer portal since Deion Sanders took over, and an opportunity like that might be one it wants to take advantage of.
Mac Markway is bound to give the Buffaloes more depth in the tight end room that has the likes of Sam Hart and Sav’ell Smalls. He has a good opportunity to secure the starting role in the room.
#2, Miami
Miami looks like it is finding its feet under Mario Cristobal. The program is projected to get even stronger in the next couple of seasons.
Markway will undoubtedly be a good addition to the Miami tight end room. The Hurricanes already have Elijah Arroyo and Riley Williams, but Markway can bring a new dimension to the team.
#3, Indiana
Indiana is set to seek redemption in the 2024 college football season under Curt Cignetti after a series of disappointing years, and the team needs all the firepower it can get to achieve this.
The Hoosiers will obviously have a lot to gain by adding Mac Markway to their tight end room. Despite having Zach Horton who transferred from JMU, Markway would make the team more formidable.
#4, Washington
Washington lost a significant member of its offense to the transfer portal this offseason following the exit of Kalen DeBoer, and the program has been active in its rebuild.
Adding Mac Markway would be a significant boost to the Huskies' tight end room, which has only one returning player in 2024. He could add substantial offensive firepower for Jedd Fisch in Seattle.
#5, Texas Tech
After recording a winning season in each of his two seasons at Texas Tech, Joey McGuire is set to make Texas Tech a bigger force in the Big 12.
Mac Markway is bound to provide depth to the Red Raiders' tight end room. The room already boasts Mason Tharp and Jalin Conyers but Markway can adequately make it stronger.
