Virginia Tech backup running back Malachi Thomas entered the transfer portal on Monday. He has one year of college eligibility remaining. Thomas rushed for 160 yards and one touchdown on 42 carries this season, playing a limited role for the Hokies. He has spent his entire four-year career at Virginia Tech.
A three-star recruit out of high school, Thomas was ranked as the No. 69 running back in the Class of 2021.
Malachi Thomas transfer portal: Landing spots
#1, Michigan
The Michigan Wolverines are expected to be active in the transfer portal as they aim to rebuild a championship-caliber team. Michigan secured No. 1 high school quarterback Bryce Underwood, a move likely to attract more talent to the program.
The Wolverines face key departures with Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings heading to the NFL, creating a significant need at running back.
Thomas could compete for the Wolverines' starting running back job. Even if he doesn't win, Michigan often uses a two-running-back system, so he still could be a big part of the offense.
#2, Georgia State
If Malachi Thomas wants to be a starting running back, he may have to go to a lesser school, and Georgia State makes sense.
Thomas is from Georgia, so in the final year of his eligibility, he could return home and be the starting running back. He could come in and compete for the starting job and look to prove he can be an NFL running back.
#3, Northwestern
Northwestern struggled in the Big Ten and should be active in the transfer portal. Improving the running game will be a top priority for the Wildcats. Northwestern should aim to add at least one running back if not two.
Thomas could compete for the Wildcats' starting job. The previous starter, Cam Porter, was a graduate player, leaving the starting role open.
Joining a smaller program for a starting opportunity should be Thomas' focus. This approach would maximize his final year of college eligibility.
