Marcus Freeman was announced as the 30th head football coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on December 3, 2021. During his first season in 2022, the team finished with a 9-4 record and won the Gator Bowl against South Carolina who were ranked 19 nationally. His team also collected four crucial victories, the most notable one was against the No. 5 Clemson Tigers. In 2023, Freeman's team improved the overall record to 10-3 and also won the Sun Bowl game against Oregon State. That season, the Fighting Irish won against some of the top-ranked programs such as USC Trojans and Duke Blue Devils. Freeman’s defensive unit was ranked among the best in the nation, they were positioned first in terms of team pass efficiency defense. His offensive unit was also remarkable, the team averaged 39.1 points per game, the second in the program's history.

Marcus Freeman appeared in numerous Bowl games at the FBS level, both as a player and coach. As a player at Ohio State, Marcus Freeman experienced four consecutive bowl appearances, first in the Alamo Bowl in 2005, then the Fiesta Bowl in 2006, and two BCS National Championship Games in 2007 and 2008. During his coaching career, he appeared in the Sugar Bowl in 2010 for Ohio State and GoDaddy.com Bowl in 2012 for Kent State. During his time at Cincinnati, he was a defensive coach in the Military Bowl in 2018 and also appeared in the Birmingham Bowl in 2019, and Peach Bowl in 2020. Since his appointment at Notre Dame, Freeman led the program to the 2021 Fiesta Bowl, eventually winning the 2022 Gator Bowl and the 2023 Sun Bowl.
