Marcus Freeman is a collegiate football coach and has been appointed as the head coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team since 2021. During the 2023 season, he finished the season with a 10-3 record and also won the Sun Bowl against the No. 21 team Oregon State. He won against some of the top programs in the nation such as the No. 10 Southern California and No. 17 Duke, proving Freeman’s capability of coaching even in high-pressure situations. Freeman helped the offensive lineman Joe Alt and safety Xavier Watts to the unanimous All-Americans team in 2023. He helped Watts become the first Irish to win the Bronko Nagurski Award for being the country's best defensive player in college football. Freeman's defensive unit in 2023 was among the top programs in the nation, the team was first in pass efficiency defense and tenth in scoring, red zone efficiency, and total defense. The Irish offense averaged 39.1 points per game, placing it among the most efficient teams in Notre Dame's history.
Marcus Freeman had a successful career as both a football player and coach. Freeman was a four-year letterman and was selected to the All-Big Ten second team in 2008. He also participated in four Big Ten Championships and made two national championship appearances before beginning his NFL career for the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans. Freeman started in 2010 as a graduate assistant coach with Ohio State. He remained the defensive coordinator with the Cincinnati team from 2017 to 2020 before helping them to become among the top 20 in the country in every defensive category.
