Cristobal served as the first Cuban-American head coach in Division I-A from 2007 to 2012 by taking his first head coaching position with Florida International University. After having a successful tenure as an assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Alabama, Cristobal joined Oregon in 2017 as an offensive line coach before becoming the head coach in 2018. Mario Cristobal's first season as a head coach was in 2007 at Florida International University. When Cristobal joined the FIU program, he had a winless season which became the biggest test for him to revive the FIU program. Although FIU lost their first eleven games under Cristobal, his team won against North Texas, which was on a 23-game winning streak.
