When an FCS quarterback hits the transfer portal, it's generally not newsworthy. But then, FCS quarterbacks like Mark Gronowski are rare. In four seasons at South Dakota State, Gronowski has passed for 10,309 yards and 93 touchdowns. He also won two FCS titles and played in the championship game another season.

One word of caution on Gronowski. He is pondering the NFL draft as an option. Again, this isn't a typical FCS quarterback. But based on him playing the 2020 season (and redshirting in 2021), Gronowski does have a year of remaining college eligibility.

Assuming he sticks to school, here are four potential portal landing spots for Gronowski.

#4. Florida State

The Seminoles struggled through a brutal season with DJ Uiagalelei then saw freshman QB Luke Kromenhoek head out in the transfer portal. The Seminoles are a needy team, and few FCS quarterbacks could ever dream of going from South Dakota State to Florida State. but Gronowski, with his experience, excellent career and dual-threat skills could be that rare guy.

#3. UNLV

There's only one issue here. UNLV's top quarterbacks were seniors, but Virginia transfer Anthony Colandrea seems to have the starting job. But Colandrea is still a fairly raw prospect, and new coach Dan Mullen might want another player to give Colandrea a year to sit and learn. Mullen is an experienced QB whisperer and the temptation to add a legitimate star might be hard to avoid.

#2. Purdue

Purdue needs help, quick help. The Boilermakers were awful in basically all phases, and new coach Barry Odom is a defensive guy. Gronowski is originally from Illinois, so landing closer to home might be a priority. He could be the day one starter for the Boilermakers and have a season of Big Ten football to stake his future NFL case moving forward.

#1. Washington State

The obvious possibility could be this one. Washington State has a very direct connection to Gronowski, as they just hired his South Dakota State coach, Jimmy Rogers. Rogers has even indicated that he plans to bring his staff with him to the Cougars. Basically, Gronowski has a ready-made path to jump to FBS football with the same coaching staff he knows.

Meanwhile, Washington State comes off an 8-5 campaign and a bowl appearance. It's not like Gronowski has to start over in a one-year rebuild. There's a solid program there for him to join. It'll be surprising if Gronowski ends up in college anywhere but Washington State.
