In 2023, Johnson became a starting quarterback for the Aggies after Conner Weigman suffered a season-ending injury. Johnson threw 1,452 yards for nine touchdowns and completed 118 of 190 passes. He started his first game of the season against Arkansas, completing 17-of-28 passes, threw 210 yards for two touchdowns, and rushed nine times for 57 yards. Johnson registered a 305-yard pass game against Ole Miss, his career-high figure. He also played for the LSU Tigers in 2020 and played in all 12 games in 2021 and completed 2,815 yards for 27 touchdowns.
