Wide receiver Mazeo Bennett Jr. joined the South Carolina Gamecocks this season. After his arrival, the former four-star prospect became the only true freshman for the Gamecocks this season.

Before South Carolina's week 10 victory against the Texas A&M Aggies, Mazeo Bennett Jr. tallied 270 receiving yards and three touchdowns for the Gamecocks. Unfortunately, he injured himself on the field against the Aggies. So what happened to the wide receiver?

Mazeo Bennett Jr.'s injury

Late in the second quarter of the South Carolina vs Texas A&M week 10 showdown, the wide receiver injured himself after being tackled on the field. Bennett landed awkwardly on the ground and was seen stumbling.

He was taken to the locker room by medical officials for further evaluation. South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer announced that the wide receiver would be sitting out the second half of the game.

According to ABC reporter Molly McGrath, the South Carolina head coach was not very pleased with how Mazeo Bennett Jr. was tackled on the field. He also stated that he would be sending a video of the play to the SEC office for an investigation.

"When a guy gets hit near the head and can't walk off on his own, you should get a targeting or a face-mask call," McGrath said while quoting Shane Beamer.

Before being sidelined, the wide receiver had 19 receiving yards for two receptions. Despite his absence, the Gamecocks secured a comfortable 44-20 victory to record a 5-3 campaign and take a step closer to qualifying for the Bowl games.

The second half of the game saw the Aggies struggling to put up points on the scoreboard. South Carolina continued their offensive domination and put up 24 points thanks to QB LaNorris Sellers' brilliant output. He finished the night with 244 passing yards and two TD passes.

What happened to Mazeo Bennett Jr.?

Late in the second quarter, Mazeo Bennett Jr. was tackled by Texas A&M defensive back BJ Mayes. He was tackled down by the head while catching a pass at the 36-yard line and landed awkwardly on the ground.

He was helped to the locker room by the medical team as Bennett struggled to put pressure on his leg. This indicated that he might have suffered a lower-body injury due to the nature of the tackle.

Despite being a freshman, Bennett has been a key offensive weapon for the Gamecocks. Fans will be waiting with bated breath for a proper update on his injury and his availability for the rest of the season.
