The Michigan Wolverines have endured a difficult 2024 college football season. Jim Harbaugh left the Wolverines for the Los Angeles Chargers, and the program is still being adjusted to life under new coach Sherrone Moore. The Wolverines take a 6-5 record into their Week 14 matchup against historical rivals, the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ahead of the Week 14 showdown, let's examine the starting quarterback and potential depth chart for the Wolverines.
Michigan's starting QB against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 14
Davis Warren has started seven games for the Michigan Wolverines in their first season without J.J. McCarthy. Warren was McCarthy's backup for two seasons before he got the nod after the Minnesota Vikings selected the elite quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.
The Los Angeles-born quarterback will start against the Ohio State Buckeyes, and he'll look to help his team to a fourth straight win over the Buckeyes. However, Warren will need to play better than he has for the majority of the season, as he's amassed a mere 1,064 passing yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions entering Week 14.
The Buckeyes are second in the AP Top 25 rankings for a reason, and the senior-year quarterback must be on his A-game to give the Wolverines the best chance of winning.
Warren is a pocket passer and hasn't recorded a single rushing touchdown in his college football career. It'll be interesting to see how Sherrone Moore masks the flaw against the Buckeyes in Week 14.
Michigan Wolverines QB depth chart
While starting quarterback Davis Warren is limited with his feet, backup quarterback Alex Orji is better equipped due to his ability as a dual-threat quarterback. Like Warren, Orji was a backup in last season's national championship win.
Orji was heavily recruited after an impressive high school career at Sachse High School in Texas. He decided to take his talents to Michigan after then-coach Jim Harbaugh convinced him about a pathway to starting games for the Wolverines.
This season, Orji has amassed a stat line of 148 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception in eight games (three starts). He has also added 47 carries, 227 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown for good measure. Orji will start on the bench against the Ohio State Buckeyes as the Wolverines look to end what has been a tricky session on the high.
