During his high school years, Mikey had an impressive athletic career. As a sophomore, he became the starting quarterback, throwing for 1,861 yards and rushing for 532 yards. In his junior year, he passed for 1,369 yards, rushed for 571 yards, and scored 25 total touchdowns. By his senior year, Mikey led his football team to a 12-1 record and their first state title, earning the 2021 Thomas A. Simone Award and being named MaxPreps Kansas Player of the Year in 2022.

After high school, Mikey chose to attend the University of Nebraska, where he joined both the football and baseball teams. Although he didn't play in any games during his redshirt freshman year in 2022, he was recognized for his academic achievements by being named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. He was also honored as part of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2023. Despite being a talented football player, Mikey decided to focus on baseball, signing his National Letter of Intent with the Nebraska baseball program and turning down several football scholarship offers.
