The Nebraska Cornhuskers have been among the most active teams in the college football transfer portal. The Cornhuskers went 6-6 in the regular season before winning their Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl matchup against the Boston College Eagles.
They're looking to recruit solid pieces to aim for a postseason berth in the expanded College Football Playoff next season.
According to Hayes Fawcett, Georgia Southern transfer linebacker Marques Watson-Trent has committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In his five years with the Eagles, he accumulated a stat line of 358 tackles, six sacks, six pass deflections, six forced fumbles and two interceptions.
What does Marques Watson-Trent bring to the Nebraska Cornhuskers?
Marques Watson-Trent is a versatile linebacker who can do it all on the defense. He is adept at rushing quarterbacks and tackling opposing players, and he can get the odd interception if the football is tossed his way.
Watson-Trent won an array of awards during his time with Georgia Southern, including but not limited to the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year, a 2024 All-Sun Belt Conference First Team nod, a 2024 Group of 5 All-America Second Team (HERO Sports) nod and a 2024 All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team (College Football Network) nod.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers could use a player with this skill set due to their noticeable deficiencies on the defensive side of the ball. Their defense was kryptonite in 2024, as they lost all three games played with ranked opposition.
Their worst loss of the season was a 56-7 blowout against the Indiana Hoosiers. It's never a good look when an opposing team drops 50 on you.
Watson-Trent will be joined by wide receiver Hardley Gilmore IV (Kentucky Wildcats), cornerback Andrew Marshall (Idaho Vandals), safety Justyn Rhett (Georgia Bulldogs), linebacker Dasan McCullough (Oklahoma Sooners), wide receiver Nyziah Hunter (California Bears), edge rusher Williams Nwaneri (Missouri Tigers) and long snapper Kevin Gallic (New Hampshire Wildcats).
They will also be joined by defensive lineman Gabe Moore (Mississippi State Bulldogs), punter Jack McCallister (Washington Huskies), defensive lineman Jaylen George (East Tennessee State Buccaneers), quarterback Marcos Davila (Purdue Boilermakers), and wide receiver Dane Key (Kentucky Wildcats).
These additions should bring quality and depth to Matt Rhule's side in the 2025 college football season.
