New Mexico State vs FIU: Preview
New Mexico State is a 9.5-point underdog while the over/under is set at 43.5 points.
The Aggies upset Louisiana Tech at home on Tuesday in a game where New Mexico State rushed for three touchdowns. The Aggies blocked an LA Tech field goal with no time left on the clock to send the game to overtime.
New Mexico State was led by junior running back Mike Washington, who was suspended for the first quarter for missing a team meeting.
"I'm not going to sacrifice any of our values," Sanchez said, via Las Cruces Sun News. "We're going to do things the right way. We're going to build this thing the right way. It's a little thing, but it's poignant. It matters."
After serving his suspension, Washington scored the game-winning touchdown.
"When he got in, he got his chance and I'm so happy for him," Sanchez said. "It's a testament to his character. He could've easily looked me in the face and said, 'Screw you, coach...' But, he didn't ... He practiced his tail off all week. He's a great kid. He's going to be a person that continues to do well."
New Mexico State has been led by Seth McGowan, who has rushed for 458 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the Aggies' Josiah Cox has two interceptions, Kale Edwards has four sacks, and Tyler Martinez leads the way with 53 tackles.
FIU, meanwhile, is coming off a home loss to Sam Houston as the Panthers are on a three-game losing streak.
The Panthers' offense has struggled, but the team is led by its defense. Coach Mike MacIntyre says his team is frustrated, but he believes his team is still good.
“Oh, they’re frustrated. There wasn’t any outburst or anything like that going on. But, I mean, if they’re not frustrated, something’s wrong, right? So we’ll keep working on it and find a way to try to fix it, and keep going," MacIntyre said via PanthersNow.
“I love this team. I still believe we’re really good. I mean, we played four games in a row and only won one, and should have, could have won all of them. It’s tough, but they keep believing, they keep fighting, and we come back against New Mexico State a week from now, so we’ll go from there.”
FIU is led by Keyone Jenkins who's thrown for 1,438 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Defensively, the Panthers are led by Justin Noye and Geronda Hall, who have two interceptions, Travion Barnes has three sacks while also leading the team with 99 tackles.
Ultimately, this is a good spot for FIU to snap its losing streak. The Panthers' defense is legit as FIU will be able to limit New Mexico State's offense for a much-needed win.
Prediction: FIU 24, New Mexico State 17.
