Former Texas Longhorns running back Jonathon Brooks was the first prospect in his position off the 2024 NFL draft board with the No. 46 pick by the Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers traded up six spots from No. 52 to snag Brooks who was widely expected to be picked by the Dallas Cowboys, but Carolina traded two fifth-round picks to the Indianapolis Colts to get their man.
It was the second-longest wait for a running back to be picked in the draft since 2014.
The $1.2 million NIL-valued LSU Tigers superstar Flau'jae Johnson (as per On3) showed her delight at Jonathon Brooks being picked by the Panthers on her Instagram stories reposting the clip of the moment with the caption:
"I'm so prada u @jonathonbrooks step 1," she wrote.
Panthers excited about Jonathon Brooks pick
Jonathon Brooks was having a stellar season for the Texas Longhorns, playing in 11 games before an ACL injury ended his campaign. He accumulated 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales was full of praise for Brooks after picking him at No. 46. He told reporters:
“He’s (Brooks) a bigger back, he’s got range. There’s so much that he brings from a versatility standpoint—that’s probably the biggest thing that stood out. And just vision, patience, contact balance, acceleration.
"Like, he’s got it all. He’s the best back in this class and we’re so fired up just to be able to bring him in and create that competition that Dan talked about."
The Panthers have a lot of competition in their ranks for the running back room with Miles Sanders and Chuba Hubbard both in the team. General manager Dan Morgan explained why they opted to strengthen an already stacked area of the team.
“We got a really good running back room right now,” Morgan said. “When Dave [Canales] and I took this job, we said that we were gonna create competition in every position group, and it just so happened Jonathon was there and we took the opportunity to draft him.
"It’s gonna be a really competitive group and I’m excited to see them all compete during training camp and OTAs. It’s gonna be fun.”
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stated that Jonathon Brooks was the most impressive interview he had ever conducted with a player and that he was a prospect that his franchise wanted, possibly ultimately jinxing it.
