Kalen Deboer's hopes of competing in the playoffs in his debut Alabama campaign came to a halt in Week 13. The Crimson Tide played one of their worst games of the season as they succumbed to a 24-3 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, eliminating them from the SEC championship race.
DeBoer took over as Nick Saban's successor after the latter retired in January. He had a roller-coaster season, losing to Vanderbilt and Tennessee. The loss to Oklahoma meant that the Crimson Tide put up an 8-3 (4-3 SEC Conference) campaign which is also the first time since 2010 that they lost more than two games in one season.
After this underwhelming performance, fans of the Crimson Tide took to social media to troll Kalen DeBoer.
Here are the top 10 memes cracking up the internet after the Week 13 showdown.
The Alabama Crimson Tide took an early lead in the first quarter thanks to a 22-yard field goal by Graham Nicholson. But after that, it was pure dominance by Oklahoma on both sides of the ball. QB Jalen Milroe failed to create any scoring chances as he finished the night with a total of 164 passing yards and three interceptions.
After the game, Milroe praised Oklahoma's defense and stated that they played a physical game limiting Alabama's capacity to create offensive chances on the field.
"They're a really good defense. I thought they played really hard. They have a lot of guys that are physical, played really strong. And of course, when you play Alabama, you're gonna get your best, especially here at home. It's all about just attacking, having a 1-0 mentality, regrouping and acknowledging what we need to do to fix it."
Kalen DeBoer acknowledges Alabama's shortcomings during disappointing loss to Oklahoma
In the post-game press conference, Kalen DeBoer took responsibility for his team's performance against the Oklahoma Sooners. He was 'disappointed' with the outcome but is looking forward to making rectifications based on this result.
"Obviously extremely disappointed. Frustrated. Just, you know, we worked, I thought extremely hard all week, putting a plan together, guys, you know, good energy excited to come here on the road. And, you know, we just got to, we got to play better. We got to be better in our ways."
It is not the result that fans of the Crimson Tide expected from DeBoer in his debut campaign. Last season, he successfully led the Washington Huskies to a Pac-12 title and the natty finals, where they lost to the Wolverines. This was the expectation that fans had from him this season as well.
Kalen DeBoer and his team will take on the Auburn Tigers next week. It will be interesting to see if he can end his debut campaign with a victory that should give them a glimmer of hope about qualifying for the playoffs this season.
