The last time Penn State won the Big Ten championship was back in 2016, when they defeated Wisconsin. Now, after eight years, the Nittany Lions had their second opportunity to win the conference title under coach James Franklin.

Despite their best efforts, Penn State failed to emerge victorious against the undefeated Oregon Ducks who just joined the conference this season. This loss brought an end to their hopes of lifting the Big Ten title.

After the 45-37 defeat on Saturday, fans took to social media to troll and create memes about Penn State's conference championship loss to Dan Lanning's team. Here are the top 10 memes that have taken the internet by storm:

The Oregon Ducks kept the offensive pressure right from the start of the first quarter. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel found Kenyon Sadiq with two touchdown passes in the first quarter. However, the Nittany Lions replied with a 33-yard FG by Ryan Barker and a 22-yard TD pass to Nicholas Singleton by Drew Allar to reduce the deficit.

The Ducks scored two more touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter, while Penn State replied with a field goal and a touchdown of their own. At the end of the first half, Dan Lanning's team had a 31-24 lead against the Nittany Lions. Oregon's offensive dominance continued in the second half.

A 48-yard TD pass by Dillon Gabriel in the third quarter and a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Jordan James proved to be enough for the Ducks to take home the victory. Drew Allar did find another TD pass for Penn State to make it 45-37 in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the team could not capitalize on this momentum further.

Penn State HC James Franklin questions officiating calls during Big Ten championship game

The Nittany Lions finished the game with five penalties for 65 yards, while Oregon had three penalties for 24 yards. In the post-game presser, James Franklin questioned the officiating of the Big Ten title game, stating that it felt kind of unfair towards his team.

"I don't want this to come off the wrong way. I give Oregon a ton of credit, but the penalties were pretty lopsided," Franklin said. "

Despite this disappointing loss, James Franklin felt that the season was just beginning for the Nittany Lions, as they still have to compete in the 12-team playoffs. He believes that they can get redemption by focusing on unleashing their full potential to win the natty.

"Our season has just begun. We'll find out tomorrow if we have a home game in 16 inches of snow, or on the road."

The last time the Nittany Lions won a national championship was back in 1986. Can Franklin and his team finally end this long trophy drought of the program this season?
