How did Deion Sanders' Colorado fare against BYU?
Colorado’s Alamo Bowl appearance ended in a disappointing 36-14 loss to BYU. While their regular season was encouraging, finishing 9-3, the Buffaloes were outplayed from start to finish in their last game.
BYU led 27-0 midway through the third quarter, with strong performances from quarterback Jake Retzlaff, running back LJ Martin, and linebacker Isaiah Glasker. Colorado’s defense managed two first-half interceptions by DJ McKinney and Anquin Barnes Jr. and a later interception by Cam'Ron Silmon-Craig, but their offense struggled mightily. Coach Prime said:
“We’re not happy with the results, but we’re happy with the journey.”
The offensive line was at a loss owing to Phillip Houston’s injury. Coach Prime’s QB son Shedeur got little protection. The Buffs only gained two rushing yards (36 without sacks factored in) and Sanders was sacked four times.
As usual, Heisman winner Travis Hunter was a bright spot on offense, with four receptions, 106 receiving yards and one touchdown. LaJohntay Wester also contributed 51 receiving yards, and Sav'ell Smalls caught his first career touchdown. On defense, Cam'Ron Silmon-Craig had six tackles, 1.5 TFLs, and an interception, while Chidozie Nwankwo tallied seven tackles, 1.5 TFLs, and a forced fumble.
Shedeur Sanders finished with 208 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. BYU’s LJ Martin rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns, and Isaiah Glasker had eight tackles (four solo and four combined). For Colorado, the offseason will focus on the quarterback battle between Julian Lewis and Kaidon Salter.
