Sherrone Moore was the obvious choice to replace Jim Harbaugh after the former head coach left for the NFL following his national championship win. Moore was also appointed interim head coach for the 2023 season, while Harbaugh was facing suspension over sign-stealing allegations.
There is a lot of debate when it comes to the team's future this year after losing big names like JJ McCarthy, Blake Corum, and 11 other players to the 2024 NFL draft.
Howard Griffith, who is a two-time Super Bowl champ, recently weighed in on Sherrone Moore's debut season as the Michigan head coach and expressed optimism for the campaign.
"He was the acting head coach for such a large part of what Michigan did in 2023 you think about what he was able to accomplish, him personally, right? And he was the offensive line coach," Griffith said. "He was calling plays, and even the acting head coach, I don't know that we've ever seen that in college football to this point, and win the national title.
"So it's going to be a much different team. They've got to overhaul the roster. They've got a lot of new players that are going to have an opportunity to play it, and I think you can expect them to take a little bit of a step back. But what I saw in the spring, the intensity and the mentality and the way they were going business had not changed. I think this team that's going to be able to continue to compete," he added.
Josh Pate on Michigan's chances of winning natty again in 2024
Sherrone Moore joined the Michigan staff in 2018 as a tight end and later moved on to the role of offensive line coach.
Even after their electrifying run in the 2023 season, many individuals have speculations about the Wolverines' future. Michigan's No. 4 ranking in the Big Ten preseason media poll was viewed as "too high" for the team.
Josh Pate recently shared his analysis of the Wolverines' chances to win the national championship in a row:
"I am high on Michigan, I don't think they are going to win the national title this year. So if that's being low on them, maybe we define that differently. But I'm very high on them as a team. Defensive line, linebacker combination about as good as you'll see in college football this year or very close to it," Pate said (via CBS Sports College Football's Instagram account).
