Several teams have performed above and below the offseason's expectations in the 2024 college football season. Some programs projected for success have disappointed, while a few underdogs have emerged as surprises.
Among the Power Four conferences, a handful of teams have performed well beyond preseason projections. Following the conclusion of Week 11, here's a look at three teams that have shattered preseason projections.
Three college football teams that have shattered offseason expectations after Week 11
#1. Indiana (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten)
Indiana has been the biggest surprise package of the 2024 college football season. The Hoosiers, under the leadership of a new coach, were projected to finish at the bottom of the Big Ten standings. However, Curt Cignetti has amazed everyone with his immediate impact.
The Hoosiers welcomed defending national champion Michigan to Bloomington on Saturday and handed them a 20-15 defeat. This leaves the program undefeated after 10 games, with sights set on the championship game and a playoff spot.
With the latest win, Indiana has achieved beyond what anyone could have projected for it in the offseason. The transformation of the Hoosiers this season under Cignetti is incomparable.
#2. BYU (9-0, 6-0 Big 12)
BYU was not in the mix of teams that had the chance to claim the Big 12 championship in the offseason. Playing only their second season in the conference, the Cougars were ranked No. 13 among the 16 teams before the commencement of the season.
However, Kalani Sitake and his team have taken everyone by surprise with their level of play. BYU remains undefeated after nine games and is now the clear favorite for the Big 12 championship, with a playoff spot almost certain.
The Cougars didn't have it easy. They have one of the toughest schedules in the league. Their conference schedule includes six of the preseason top eight teams in the league.
#3. Colorado (7-2, 5-1 Big 12)
After experiencing significant struggle in Deion Sanders' first season in Boulder, not many projected something huge for Colorado in the offseason. They weren't in the top 10 of the Big 12 preseason ranking, holding the 11th place out of the league 16 teams.
However, the Buffaloes boast a 7-2 record and now have a strong chance of making it to the Big 12 championship game. Their remaining three games are against teams with a .500 winning percentage or less.
Without a doubt, the Colorado Buffaloes have achieved beyond what many anticipated for them this season. It is to be seen how far they can go further to prove doubters wrong.
