The college football season kicked off on Aug. 24, however, none of the SEC's 16 teams were among the eight that were in action. That changed in Week 1 as each of the conference's programs took the field to begin their 2024 season. As a group, they were 13-3 to start the season. Each of the three teams that suffered losses did so at the hands of a ranked opponent.

While quarterback play in the division was generally strong to open the season, that could change as the season progresses. Here's a closer look at three SEC quarterbacks who are overrated heading into Week 2 of the season.

3 overrated SEC QBs entering Week 2 of college football season

#1. Conner Weigman - Texas A&M Aggies

Conner Weigman entered the season with +2500 odds to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy. The Texas A&M Aggies quarterback had a poor showing in their 23-13 Week 1 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He completed just 12 of his 30 pass attempts for 100 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Additionally, he was only able to lead one touchdown drive. While he had a tough matchup in Week 1, the SEC is filled with stacked defenses.

#2. Payton Thorne - Auburn Tigers

Payton Thorne had +25000 Heisman Trophy odds entering the season. While he had a great Week 1 performance in the Auburn Tigers' 73-3 Week 1 win over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, they are an FCS program that struggled last season.

A better gauge of his performance would be last season when he threw for 1,755 yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 61.1% of his passes. As the schedule gets tougher, his performance could revert to where it was in 2023.

#3. Graham Mertz - Florida Gators

Graham Mertz entered the season with +15000 Heisman Trophy odds. While he suffered a concussion late in the third quarter of the Florida Gators' 41-17 Week 1 loss to the Miami Hurricanes – and will miss this week's matchup with the Samford Bulldogs – he struggled tremendously. He completed 11 of his 20 attempts, throwing for just 91 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

More concerning, the Gators struggled to move the ball when he was on the field. With a brutal conference schedule, Mertz's play should continue to struggle.
