Florida State Seminoles have a long history of facing teams from the SEC. Although the program has never played in the conference, it holds a winning record against many teams from the South.
As the Southeastern Conference is often regarded as the strongest in college football, here are five historic Florida State matchups against SEC teams:
5 Historic Florida State matchups with SEC teams
#5. FSU vs. Texas A&M Aggies
These teams have met on four occasions, with the Seminoles winning all four matchups, making Texas A&M the only SEC team that Florida State has never lost to. The most notable meeting was the 1992 Cotton Bowl, where Florida State came out as 10-2 winners, defeating the unbeaten Aggies.
This game is also noteworthy, as it was the last one the Seminoles played as an independent school before joining the ACC.
#4. FSU vs. South Carolina Gamecocks
Another program that the Seminoles have a long and successful history against is the South Carolina Gamecocks. The teams have met on 19 occasions, and the FSU has won 16 of these, including the last seven matchups.
These games were played out almost yearly, between 1966-1973, and then again between 1982-1991. But since '91, the teams have only met once, in the 2010 Peach Bowl, which was won by the Seminoles.
#3. FSU vs. LSU Tigers
Both the Seminoles and Tigers have the same number of conference championships (16). However, there is little parity in the series between the two teams, as the Seminoles have a 9-2 lead.
The teams last met in the opening week of the 2023 season, where Jordan Travis led the Seminoles to a 45-23 victory, starting their undefeated season.
#2. FSU vs. Auburn Tigers
The Seminoles and Tigers have met on 20 occasions, with Auburn winning 13 games and one game in 1992 that ended in a tie.
Their last matchup was in the 2013 National Championship game, where the Seminoles, led by quarterback Jameis Winston, scored a late touchdown to win 34-31.
#1. FSU vs. Florida Gators
The Seminoles and the Gators are required to play every season and have done so since 1958, meeting 67 times. The Gators lead the series with 37 to the Seminoles' 28, with two ties. However, since 2010, the Seminoles have won all but four games. This trend is expected to continue as the Gators struggle to remain a top program in the SEC.
