The world of conference realignment will continue to happen as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is on the brink of a similar fate that the Pac-12 Conference suffered.
With the Clemson Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles currently in individual lawsuits with the ACC, the fate of the conference hangs in the balance.
College sports insider Greg Swaim is reporting that more than a handful of Atlantic Coast Conference programs have contacted the Big 12 Conference. Those schools are the NC State Wolfpack, Virginia Tech Hokies, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Louisville Cardinals, Miami Hurricanes, Syracuse Orange and Duke Blue Devils.
While this does not necessarily signify that these seven teams are going to be playing in the Big 12 Conference in the future, it at least gives some indication that these schools are at least concerned about their future.
What is the state of the ACC right now?
The ACC is still in a rocky situation as two of its biggest programs—Clemson and Florida State—are trying to figure out a way to leave the conference.
While there is potentially a way to settle the two programs without causing a massive problem for the health of the conference, it seems that Florida State and Clemson are past the point of no return by suing the ACC.
Big 12 expansion can add a handful of teams from ACC
While adding all seven does not seem likely, it appears Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark could have his pick.
Looking at the previous realignment moves, Yormark appears to care more about the overall health of the conference than just college football dominance.
That is why the Duke Blue Devils and Miami Hurricanes seem to be the two schools he will be targeting the most of the group. Having the history that both programs bring would add more prestige to the conference.
While the Big 12 is going to look at other schools besides these to expand, this is something to definitely keep an eye on, as the ACC collapse seems more likely than ever.
