The Texas A&M Aggies, under coach Mike Elko, did not start the season in optimal fashion losing to coach Marcus Freeman's Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Week 1 action. Since then, the No. 14 Aggies have won seven straight games culminating in a huge Week 9 38-23 win over the No. 7 LSU Tigers at Kyle Field.

It's the first time in their history that the Aggies have started a season 5-0 in the Southeastern Conference and they now top the conference table with ambitions of the championship game and a spot in the expanded 12-team college football playoffs.

The Tigers led by as much as 10 points with Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman having a difficult game until Elko made a switch in the third quarter to backup quarterback Marcel Reed leading to the storming second-half comeback to pull off the win.

Texas A&M registers statement victory after Mike Elko switch

The Texas A&M Aggies were staring down a hole at halftime of their Week 9 game with the LSU Tigers leading 17-7 and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier keeping the offense ticking over in College Station.

Quarterback Connor Weigman struggled massively until the Aggies coach decided to make the switch to redshirt freshman Marcel Reed who led three straight touchdown drives to complete the comeback.

During his postgame news conference, Elko revealed why he made the switch to Reed from QB1 Weigman who went 6-of-18 for 64 yards before being benched. Reed managed 70 yards and 62 rushing yards on nine carries resulting in three touchdowns.

"We needed the running threat back there with the way they were playing us," Elko said. "We're having a hard time in the pass game and Marcel's dual-threat ability is what we needed right now."

Mike Elko recognized that his team has the opportunity to have a successful season after the Aggies took sole leadership of the SEC table after their win over the previously unbeaten LSU Tigers.

“We have an amazing opportunity right now that we really want to take advantage of," Elko said.

The Texas A&M Aggies have their destiny in their own hands with games against the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Auburn Tigers on the immediate horizon before a season-closing clash against the Texas Longhorns which could determine whether they make it into the SEC championship game and possibly, the college football playoffs.
