Alabama coach Nick Saban shocked the college football fraternity on Wednesday evening when it was announced that the legendary coach was finally retiring.
It had been a long time coming, and the tributes poured in for Saban, valued at $75 million by Forbes, over a lengthy career where he won seven national championships to make him the most successful college football coach.
Never one to sit on his haunches, a clip of Nick Saban showing Crimson Tide defensive back Malachi Moore how to play golf surfaced on Instagram on the CBS feed with the caption:
"A leader on the field and on the course."
Nick Saban shares a bond with Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore recently announced his intention to return to Alabama for his fifth year, and as a permanent team captain, his return will be a boost to the new coach.
During an ESPN interview, Nick Saban revealed that one of the hardest players to break the news of his retirement to was Moore.
“I love all the players, but there’re some players — I mean you’re human — that you have special relationships with," Saban said. "And I spend more time with the defensive guys and I spend more time with the defensive backs, so when a lot of the players came up, Malachi Moore and Caleb Downs, Malachi’s one of the captains on the team.
“Those two guys were probably the most difficult.”
Why did Nick Saban retire?
There has always been speculation about the long-serving coach retiring, but Saban always came back, so his actual retirement shook college football to the core when it was confirmed.
Although they lost 27-20 to the Michigan Wolverines in the Rose Bowl/CFP semifinal, the 2023 season saw incremental improvement in the Alabama Crimson Tide, and Saban was expected to build another great team.
In an interview with ESPN's Rece Davis, Nick Saban outlined why he chose to retire after this season.
“To be honest, this last season was grueling,” Saban said. “It was a real grind for us to come from where we started to where we got to. It took a little more out of me than usual. When people mentioned the health issue, it was really just the grind.
“It put a little more stress on me, made me feel like maybe I wasn’t doing as good a job as I needed to in other parts of our team.”
Regardless of why he retired, Saban revealed that he would get an office in the Bryant-Denny Stadium, which will be of some comfort to Bama fans.
