Nick Saban had a successful stint as a head coach in college football. He won seven national championships, one with the LSU Tigers and six during his 17-season stint with the Alabama Crimson Tide. In January last year, Saban announced his retirement and began his journey in the world of broadcasting.
This season, Saban joined the ESPN College GameDay crew and became a fan favorite. During the show's segment at the Cotton Bowl Classic CFP semifinal showdown between the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes, the former head coach had a surprise waiting for him.
During the GameDay show, Saban's co-host Rece Davis began a monologue about the rich history of college football. He then broke the news that the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame has decided to induct Nick Saban into the CFB Hall of Fame as the first member of the 2025 class.
The former Alabama head coach was visibly surprised by the news and admitted that he had no clue about his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. His co-host Pat McAfee then went on to congratulate Saban and expressed his gratitude for his contributions to the game of football.
"This is a surprise to you. You're the first one getting announced," McAfee said. "Easiest vote in the history. You are the GOAT, how you've represented this sport, how you've done on this particular program talking for the sport that you've committed your entire life to. Congratulations coach, we love you man."
Nick Saban shows appreciation for being selected to be inducted into College Football Hall of Fame
The seven-time national champ expressed his gratitude for the honor of being a part of the College Football Hall of Fame. He also showcased his appreciation for all the people he worked with and talked about how it was because of their collective contribution that they were successful on the field.
"Thank you so much," Saban said. "But anytime anything like this happens, it's because you had a lot of great people in your organization. A lot of great players a lot of great coaches, a lot of support staff.
"And then they made a great team. And I was happy to drive the bus but we had some great people on it," he added.
Nick Saban will be inducted with the rest of the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame Class on Dec. 9 at the 67th NFF Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas. The rest of the members of this class will be announced on Jan. 15 during the "College Football Live" show.
Nick Saban never had a losing season during his 28 years as a head coach. Last year in September, Alabama commemorated his achievements with the program by naming the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium as Saban Field.
