Former Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban has had a busy week. He appeared at the SEC Media Days as an analyst for the SEC Network.
Away from his work as an analyst, Saban, who retired in January after a glorious 17-year tenure as coach of the Crimson Tide, was feted by his former team.
On Friday, the University of Alabama Board of Trustees Honorary Degrees and Recognition Committee voted to approve the naming of the field inside the Bryant-Denny Stadium as 'Saban Field'.
After the announcement, the $80 million-worth Nick Saban (as per Celebrity Net Worth), alongside his wife, Miss Terry, accepted the honor in a virtual call.
“First of all, this is a very special honor. I don’t think there could be anything that honors the hard work and the example that we tried to set for our community, our university and our program and all the players in it as to what you all have decided to do here today.
"Terry and I certainly have the utmost gratitude for this great legacy type of award that by naming the field for us. So I can’t tell you how honored and how much appreciation we have for that," Saban said.
The dedication of the newly named field will be done during a halftime show of Alabama's game against South Florida on September 7 at 6 p.m. CT and will be shown on ESPN.
Nick Saban deflects praise for naming honor
After the announcement that the field inside the Bryant-Denny Stadium would be named 'Saban Field', Nick Saban deflected the honor of such a significant event. He instead chose to focus on the overall impact of the people around him.
“But this honor, or naming, is representative of what a lot of people contributed to. We never really ever had any signs up that said win a championship, win the national championship, win the SEC. It was all about being a champion in everything that you do – in your personal development. Graduation, 668 degrees is something that I’m most proud of in the 17 years that we were the conductor of the program at the university," Saban said.
Nick Saban will always be regarded as a hero in Tuscaloosa for the work that he did with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Yet, even with the praise raining down on him, he chose instead to share the acclaim with others instead of taking it all for himself.
