Former Louisville placekicker John Wallace died Wednesday. Born in 1993, the 31-year-old holds the Cardinals' field goal record with 66. The cause of death hasn't been released yet, although the program released a brief statement.

"We are saddened by the passing of Cardinal Forever John Wallace," Louisville football said. "Our thoughts are with his loved ones."

The death of Wallace, who committed to Louisville in 2011, comes as a huge shock to the college football world. Many fans have reacted online, sending condolences to his family and loved ones.

John Wallace: College football career

John Wallace played for Louisville from 2012 until 2015 under Bobby Petrino and Charlie Strong. He helped the Cardinals to four straight bowl appearances, which included a win in the 2013 Sugar Bowl over Florida. He kicked a pair of field goals in the 33-23 victory over the Gators.

In 2012, Wallace was 16 of 21 and made 10 of 11 kicks to start the season with his only miss being a 57-yard attempt. In that same year, he kicked a 30-yard field goal to give the Louisville Cardinals a 34-31 overtime win over Cincinnati.

Wallace's most accurate season came as a sophomore in 2013 when he made 20 of 24 field-goal attempts (83.3%). He also recorded his career-best 112 points with the Cardinals that season.

In 2014, he connected on 15 of his 19 field goal attempts and was perfect on all 50 extra-point attempts. He concluded the season ranked second all-time with 51 field goals. Notably, he matched his career high by making three field goals against NC State and achieved a career-long 51-yard field goal against Syracuse.

John Wallace's legacy at Louisville

John Wallace was an outstanding football player with Louisville, finishing second in all-time points scored and first in all-time field goals as well as being an Academic All-American.

He played in an astonishing four straight bowl games. His 20-for-24 kicking in 2013 helped the Cardinals to a school-best 12-1 record, including a Russell Athletic Bowl victory.

His exploits at Louisville will continue to linger on as his 85 career field-goal attempts are also a school record, while his 384 points rank second and his 78% field-goal conversion rate ranks fourth among kickers in Louisville history.
