James Franklin has once again led No. 4 Penn State to a brilliant start in 2024. The Nittany Lions remain undefeated five games into the season and hope to keep the momentum going. However, Week 7 will be a tough challenge on the road against USC.

The Trojans have been inconsistent this season, with a 3-2 record and only 1-2 in conference play. However, James Franklin is wary of what the Big Ten newcomer can pull out offensively. Lincoln Riley is one of the best offensive coaches in college football and this has been evident in USC’s performance.

“Got a ton of respect for what they do offensively,” Franklin said. “They’ve been able to score points and put up yards for a long time and a lot of different places against a bunch of different teams.”
“It’ll be challenging and it’s always challenging when they got a quarterback and they do in Miller Moss who’s done some really good things in his time at USC, back to the bowl game last year.”

James Franklin praises USC defensive coordinator

Ahead of the Week 7 game, James Franklin expressed admiration for D’Anton Lynn's capabilities as a defensive coordinator. He recognizes his expertise and success in the role, which has ensured a more balanced Trojan’s defense than last season

Although Franklin mentioned that he doesn't personally know Lynn, he was quick to mention that Lynn is a Penn State graduate, which makes Saturday's game a special one for him.

“Had a top fifteen defense last year at UCLA and has done a really good job already at his time at USC,” Franklin said. “Guys that are Penn State grads, I track, and obviously the success that he had last year. Obviously, he is a guy we had on our radar and have on our radar.”

James Franklin has a lot of respect for USC

USC is undoubtedly one of the most storied programs in the world of college football. James Franklin acknowledged the Trojans' legacy and the strength of theteam, emphasizing the overall quality of the program.

“USC speaks for itself. A program with tremendous tradition and history,” Franklin said. “We’re looking forward to this opportunity and the venue, so should be a great opportunity for us.”

Penn State and USC have played a total of 10 games in the history of both programs. The Trojans lead the series with a 6-4 record, with the last meeting taking place in 2017. Franklin will hope to have the better of his opponent in Los Angeles on Saturday.
