The SEC is regarded as the toughest college football conference with teams like Alabama, Georgia and others. However, the recent conference realignment has seen conferences like the Big 12 and Big 10 flourish this season. And with the new 12-team playoffs in play this season, it could be anyone's national championship.
At the moment, the undefeated Oregon of the Big Ten is considered the favorite to win the natty. This season, teams like Alabama, Ole Miss and others have been struggling to play as per the standards they have been known for. The Rebels suffered a 24-17 loss to Florida in Week 13.
Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide suffered a disappointing 24-3 loss against Oklahoma. Following these results, college football insider Brett McMurphy trolled the SEC, saying that they are petitioning for the 12-team playoffs to be extended to 24 to give their conference a chance.
"Sources: After Ole Miss loss & with Alabama trailing Oklahoma 17-3, SEC petitioning to expand @CFBPlayoff to 24 teams, effective next month."
Fans shared their responses to the hilarious tweet by McMurphy. One commended the insider for his trolling ability.
"A+ trolling"
Another joined in on the joke, talking about how SEC commissioner Greg Sankey is already making a new rule.
"Sankey is already working on a new metric that losing on the road in SEC is worth 2 wins in any other conference."
One fan joined in on the fun McMurphy was making about the SEC.
"My sources tell me they will expand the playoffs to ALL SEC teams plus 3 at large bids."
Another commented about how SEC teams would still be heavily favored despite the losses.
"Not necessary, Brett. We know even with 3+ losses, any SEC team would be favored by 50 over Oregon...so they better not have fewer than 6 in the 12 team field!"
Another fan joked about how the Alabama Crimson Tide would schedule two games against FCS teams.
"Alabama will schedule Mercer twice from now on."
One talked about how teams in the ACC conference have been performing well this season.
"SEC getting exposed. ACC deserves 2 spots."
Alabama might be potentially eliminated from the playoff race
After Nick Saban's retirement, Kalen DeBoer took over. After a strong start, the team lost to Vanderbilt and Tennessee. With this Week 13 loss to Oklahoma, the Crimson Tide are 8-3 and won't be competing for the SEC title this season.
Moreover, the Crimson Tide most likely also missed their chance of securing a berth in the new 12-team playoffs. It's also the first time since 2010 that the program has lost more than two games in a season.
The Crimson Tide's only hope of competing in the playoffs is as an at-large team. However, that decision will be in the hands of the selection committee. The Tide are scheduled to finish the regular season with an Iron Bowl showdown against Auburn next week.
