The rivalry game between the Michigan State Spartans and the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines was already charged after the signal-stealing scandal involving Jim Harbaugh's team. Along with it, an incident before kickoff shocked everyone.

An hour and a half before kickoff, a pregame trivia beamed an image of Adolf Hitler on the stadium's big screens as the answer to the question, "Where was Hitler born."

The image was captured by fans and went viral on social media within minutes.

Alan Haller, the Spartans athletic director, released a statement on Monday regarding the incident.

"Michigan State Athletics is responsible for all content shown on its video boards," Haller said. "Before it was displayed, the video was not viewed in its entirety by anyone in athletics, exposing a failure in our process. The video was not part of a sponsorship and had no affiliation with any of our corporate partners or our community."

The employee responsible for the image was also suspended with pay after the controversy generated by the image erupted on social media.

"An initial assessment was conducted, and an involved employee has been identified and suspended with pay pending the results of an investigation. The investigation will determine any future appropriate actions," the statement continued.

Haller further reached out to the Jewish community and students in and around the school after the incident.

"Antisemitism must be denounced," Haller said. "The image displayed prior to Saturday night's game is not representative of who we are and the culture we embody. Nevertheless, we must own our failures and accept responsibility. I understand our response might be met with skepticism. That skepticism is warranted, and we will do all that is necessary to earn back your trust."

The image was taken from a YouTube channel named "The Quiz Channel" from an episode aired on October 13. Floris van Pallandt, the creator of the channel, issued a statement on the incident on his YouTube page.

“It’s an absolutely normal trivia question, shown in an inappropriate setting,” Floris van Pallandt said. “Ignoring the dark facets of history is by no means the answer, on the contrary.”

Michigan State's controversial season

The unfortunate incident was not the Spartans' only controversy this season. They fired coach Mel Tucker after he was accused of sexual harassment by activist Brenda Tracy.

Alan Haller appointed Harlon Bennett as an interim coach before the search for a permanent option resumed at the end of the season.

Michigan State fans have had a horrid time this season with the controversies off the gridiron and the awful 2-5 overall record.
