Albany defensive end AJ Simon died on Wednesday morning. He was 25. While details are not out about the cause of death, Simon was preparing for the 2024 NFL draft.
The school's football program posted the news on its social media:
"The UAlbany football program was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral "AJ" Simon this morning. AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany. He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years. He will be profoundly missed."
AJ Simon played for the Albany Great Danes for two seasons, recording 79 tackles, including 16.5 sacks.

There has been an outpouring of love for AJ Simon from people who knew him, sharing their thoughts about him. One person who posted their feelings was head coach Greg Gattuso.
"Two joyous year coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon. My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8," Albany coach Greg Gattuso posted
Zack McKinnell, the owner of FCS Football Central, tweeted:
"I'm still speechless since I received the news earlier today... Had a chance to sit down with AJ earlier this year and discuss his journey to UAlbany. I want to send my prayers and condolences to the Simon family."
