In an action-packed first half, Northern Illinois got things going following an Akron fumble, kicking a 32-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The Zips were quick to respond, with a 40-yard touchdown connection from Ben Finley to Adrian Norton, giving Akron a 6-3 lead.
Northern Illinois kept the scoring streak alive with a 58-yard scamper to the endzone from Trayvon Rudolph, giving the Huskies a 10-6 lead with eight minutes remaining in the opening quarter. NIU forced a punt on Akron's ensuing drive and capitalized with a trick play 39-yard touchdown pass from Rudolph to Dane Partridge, extending their lead to 17-6.
After an exchange of punts, Akron possessed the ball to start the second quarter, kicking a 27-yard field goal to cut the lead to 17-9. The Zips forced a punt on Northern Illinois' ensuing drive and blocked it, returning it for a touchdown to bring the score to 17-16 with under ten minutes left in the first half.
The Huskies responded with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Grayson Barnes, extending their lead to 23-16 going into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Northern Illinois and Akron entered the fourth quarter. On NIU’s second drive of the quarter, Gavin Williams burst for a 71-yard touchdown run, giving the Huskies a 29-16 lead after failing the two-point conversion.
