Caleb Williams revealed his rookie signing bonus in front of his Chicago Bears teammates. But what caught the eyes of the fans was his "Horns Down" comment, a nod to his former team the Oklahoma Sooners’ rivalry with the Texas Longhorns. The new Bears starting quarterback isn't letting go of the college rivalry even after leaving the Sooners two seasons ago.
The Bears selected Williams using their first overall pick in this year's draft to replace Justin Fields as their quarterback. The team is looking for a rebuild, having not made the playoffs since 2020. And the Bears are paying their new weapon handsomely even before he has stepped onto the field.
Here is what Williams had to say about the Texas Longhorns while revealing his $25.5 million signing bonus with the Chicago Bears.
“Caleb Williams, went to USC and Oklahoma. Horns Down still, fight on. And my signing bonus is 25.5,” he can be heard saying in the video.
The college football world was quick to react to Williams' revelation on social media. The fans also shared their thoughts on the "Horns Down" comment the former Sooner made. Here are a few reactions from the fans:
Williams started his college career in Norman, Oklahoma, in 2021 and spent a year as the Sooners QB. He then moved to play for the USC Trojans the next year, where he won the Heisman trophy for the 2022 season. It remains to be seen if he will justify his massive paycheck when he finally takes the field in the NFL.
CJ Stroud has made it tough for Caleb Williams, according to Adam Schefter
While Williams is going to the NFL with high expectations, it might be even tougher for him. The reason, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter, is CJ Stroud. The Houston Texans had bet on the former Ohio State QB by picking him second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. According to Schefter, every rookie QB, including Williams, will be measured up against Stroud due to his performance in his first year.
“And now all these guys, Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, any of these guys are going to be measured against a guy who set the standard last year. He elevated the bar for rookie quarterbacks. Expectations for first-round draft picks, a rookie quarterback already are high, he made them higher,” Schefter said on ESPN’s "Get Up."
Stroud took the Texans to the playoffs last season when almost nobody expected them to. He also became the youngest QB to win a playoff game as Houston defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round. The Bears last won a playoff game back in 2011 and are counting on Williams to end that drought. Will he be able to do it?
