The SEC Media Days are underway, and one of the bigger storylines is the recent expansion of the conference. The Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners are the newest members of the expansion, which has increased the conference's membership to 16 teams.
During the event, Commissioner Greg Sankey addressed questions about his attention to the situation in the ACC, especially concerning the Clemson Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles, who are exploring affiliation options amid a lawsuit to leave the Atlantic Coast Conference. According to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, Sankey said:
"I pay attention. We are focused on our 16 (teams). I've said before that I am not a recruiter. ... I'm not going to entangle (the SEC) in litigation."
However, Dellenger disclosed that Sankey has received calls from other schools interested in joining the conference:
"He did add that Texas and Oklahoma 'aren't the only phone calls' he has received from other interested schools."
What schools make the most sense for SEC expansion?
Even though Commissioner Greg Sankey expressed that the conference will probably not welcome more schools anytime soon and is focused on the pre-existing teams, the interest from other schools in joining the conference is understandable given its reputation in the United States. If the conference were to consider expansion, two schools make the most sense: the Clemson Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles.
The SEC has kept the geographical location of their conference strictly in the southeastern portion of the United States. The ACC has West Coast teams, while both the Big Ten and Big 12 are scattered across the map.
That means Sankey's conference has a strategic ability to add the Clemson Tigers and Florida State Seminoles to the expansion. These schools add value as they are both highly competitive in the ACC and are smacked in the middle of the SEC stronghold.
