On Tuesday, it was reported that the Penn State Nittany Lions defensive End Amin Vanover was charged with a DUI. He was caught driving under the influence of marijuana.
This led fans to believe that Vanover is likely to be suspended, as this has been the case when players from other teams have had such encounters with the law.
Penn State coach James Franklin was asked about this, and whether Vanover would receive any form of internal punishment, during his press conference on Tuesday. He said:
“I think you guys know that have covered us for a long time, I don’t know if there’s been very many times, if any, that I’ve talked about internal punishments that we’ve had. We released a statement on it. But I don’t think there’s been many times where I’ve actually told you guys what the internal punishment was going to be.”
Franklin mentioned that the University released a statement on what happened to Amin Vanover, which read:
"We are aware of the charges against Amin Vanover. These alleged actions do not reflect the values and standards of our program and will be addressed. We will not comment any further as this is an ongoing legal matter."
What happened to Amin Vanover?
According to statecollege.com, who obtained the case's affidavit, said that the police stopped Vanover, who was alone in his car on August 8. The reason why they did this was because the car he was in had an expired registration plate.
The police then reported that the car smelled of marijuana and that Vanover had bloodshot pupils and a "generally sleepy appearance."
Vanover failed sobriety tests and was then arrested. Subsequent blood tests found that he did test positive for THC, a key chemical found in marijuana.
While it is currently not known what punishment he is going to receive for Penn State (if any), a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 2.
Amin Vanover on the field
The 2024 season is Amin Vanover's fifth with the Penn State Nittany Lions. During his time with Penn State, he sporadically played games for the team.
In these five seasons, he has made 31 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He has also made one forced fumble, which occurred during the Nittany Lions' game with Iowa in 2023.
This season, he has been involved in two tackles. Whether this number will increase may be dependent on the punishments he may receive as a result of his arrest.
