Steve Sarkisian did not mince words regarding the officiating of the SEC Championship game between Texas and Georgia during his halftime on-field interview. The coach expressed frustration over several holding calls that went against his team in the first half, making his dissatisfaction evidently clear.
ESPN's Laura Rutledge asked Sarkisian how the Longhorns intended to avoid getting those calls against them in the second half after eight first-half penalties. With a furious face, the coach didn’t hold back, placing the blame squarely on the officiating for the calls that had gone against his team.
“Well, hopefully they call them for a holding one of these times too,” Sarkisian said before abruptly walking away.
Steve Sarkisian's halftime interview with Laura Rutledge didn’t impress many college football fans. It immediately resulted in a series of backlash for the coach in the online space. Here's a look at some of the reactions:
"Crybaby"
"Get him some French cries with that whaaaa burger"
A couple of fans wondered what Sark was mad about when his team was supposedly getting away with penalties.
"Texas is the one who's holding every d*mn play"
"Bros team is holding every play and mad at the refs"
"how does it feel sark to not get all the calls?"
Meanwhile, one fan found the Sark interview utterly hilarious.
"I laughed out loud when I was watching this. So funny!"
Steve Sarkisian reacts to the SEC championship game loss to Georgia
Texas lost 22-19 to Georgia in overtime on Saturday. It was a thrilling and competitive game between both teams at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta but the Bulldogs eventually triumphed. Steve Sarkisian offered his video on the loss in his postgame press conference.
"This is the life of a competitor,” Sarkisian said. “You get into this arena, you compete at the highest level against quality opponents, there's going to be sways and flows in the ball game that sometimes go your way and sometimes don't.
“I think the challenge in games like this is to maximize the opportunities when you get them. In the first half, we had some great opportunities and we just couldn't capitalize the way we would have liked. I think every guy that was out there battling and competing left it all out there."
Overall, it's been a good year for the Longhorns in their first season in the SEC. Apart from reaching the conference championship game, they’ve also been able to assemble the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2025 cycle after the early signing day.
Steve Sarkisian and his team now have their focus on the College Football Playoff. The coach made it known that his team is good enough to win the national title in his postgame press conference on Saturday. Without a doubt, the Longhorns are going to be a contender for the ultimate goal in the 12-team playoff.
