After receiving the opening kickoff, Coastal Carolina marched down the field on a seven-play, 68-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. The Chanticleers forced a fumble on Appalachian State's first drive and capitalized with a second consecutive touchdown, taking a commanding 14-0 lead to end the first quarter.
Coastal Carolina forced a second-straight turnover and kicked a 29-yard field goal, extending their lead to 17-0 in the opening minutes of the second quarter.
