Backup quarterback Arch Manning's dazzling performance in the Texas Longhorns' spring game on Saturday continues to draw rave reviews. Count Pat McAfee among the admirers of what Manning put on tape.
"Spring game, I guess, Arch Manning just went bananas. ... He's been at the Manning Academy since he was six years old," McAfee said on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Monday. "They're saying he's faster than Archie, Eli and Peyton (Manning). They're saying he's stronger than them as well."
While the stats are unofficial as this game is nothing more than a scrimmage, ESPN Stats & Information provided the numbers Arch Manning posted. He finished 19 of 26 for 355 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, according to UT. ESPN also deemed that at least four of the incompletions were considered catchable passes, meaning they were thrown where the receiver should have made the play.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian discussed how he was impressed with the level of play that Manning showcased after not playing much last season.
"I wanted Arch to be able to just go play football," Sarkisian said, according to ESPN. "He hadn't really played in a year. When he keeps his eyes up and steps up in the pocket, he can deliver those balls down the field the way we like to play. It was good to see some of the guys around him play with him the way that they did. ... We're very fortunate at the quarterback position to have a third-year starter to have the backup that we have."
Steve Sarkisian discusses Arch Manning being the backup quarterback
While Arch Manning was not used to being on the bench until doing so last season, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told ESPN's Chris Low that Manning has been doing a great job of remaining patient. With the transfer rumors swirling throughout the offseason, Manning has not allowed that to get into his head.
"The majority of guys like Arch have always been the best their whole life," Sarkisian said. "Then they get to college and it's like, 'Wait, I'm not the starter?' No, but we're going to develop you in a way that when you do become the starter, you're going to play great. We're going to keep training you in a way that when your number does get called, you're going to play really good football."
Quinn Ewers is expected to remain the Longhorns' starting quarterback in Week 1 while Arch Manning will be the backup.
