Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty faces heated debate over his Heisman chances, as fans question his status among college football's elite running backs. Following Week 14, Jeanty saw his Heisman odds drop from +650 to +3000, far behind Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter's overwhelming -10000 odds (as per FanDuel).

College football fans on X/Twitter were quick to compare Jeanty to Tennessee Volunteers running back Dylan Sampson, with many arguing Sampson deserves more recognition.

“Ashton Jeanty is not the best running back in the nation. It’s Dylan Sampson,” one fan declared.
"Dylan would have those yards too with that many carries against that level of (non) Competition," wrote another.

One fan commented:

"I've seen people keep trying to say he's [Jeanty] the best running back football has ever seen. These glazers are willdddddddd."
"Glad someone said it," tweeted another fan.

Some fans saw the bigger picture and took Jeanty's side.

One CFB fan said:

"You can’t deny Jeanty rushing for 2,062 yards and counting is an impressive feat."
"I wanna agree with you but that’s just an insane take. Ashton Jeanty is RIDICULOUSLY good. Sampson is top 3 RB but Jeanty is the best RB and it’s not even close," said another fan.

Ashton Jeanty’s impressive season included being a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, an honor given to the nation’s top running back. However, Sampson was left off the final nominations despite rushing for 1,307 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Tennessee RB coach puts Dylan Sampson over Ashton Jeanty

Vols running backs coach De’Rail Sims put Dylan Sampson on the highest pedestal, calling him "the best back in the country." Sims pointed out Sampson’s unmatched production and ability to energize the team in critical moments and in the SEC:

“No. 1, being able to be with him every single day, from the way he goes and attacks the process," Sims said via MSN.com. "And things he’s been able to do from a tenacity standpoint. When the team needs a spark plug, he’s able to be that guy. Coach Heupel always talks about it.
“It only takes one match to start a fire. And a lot of times we get in critical situations and he’s the guy that jump starts the fire and gets us rolling in the right direction. In my opinion, he’s the best back in the country," he added.

While Sampson led the SEC in rushing yards and attempts this season, he wasn’t considered worthy of being a finalist for the Doak Walker Award. The nods went instead to Jeanty, North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton and Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson.
