The race for the Heisman Trophy is in its last leg. It's clear by now that either Ashton Jeanty or Travis Hunter will win the award. The finalists will be announced on Dec. 9, while the final ceremony will take place on Dec. 14 at Lincoln Center in New York City.
The voting has officially started, and voters will have until Monday at 5:00 p.m. ET to make up their minds between these two outstanding players (or others if they so choose). At the moment, Hunter is the clear frontrunner with a majority of betting houses giving him +10000 odds of winning.
However, not everyone agrees. One fan said:
"Jeanty clears Hunter."
The Jeanty crowd highlighted that while the running back is leading the nation in almost every rushing stat, Travis Hunter leads in no defensive or receiving stat:
"He has 628 more yards rushing than the guy in second place. That is an utterly insane statistic. The other guy who refers to himself as “one of one“ does not lead in any statistical category," another fan said.
"Sad to see all the vitriol against Travis Hunter and Deion Sanders. Racism vilifies the vocal African American man," another fan added.
A fan pointed out that it's unfair that the voting is taking place ahead of the conference championship games:
"Why would voting happen before conference championship games one of the candidates is still playing this week."
One fan is confident in Hunter's victory:
"So Hunter wins on the 9th nice!"
Another called Jeanty a "no-brainer" :
"Ashton is all deserving. Look at his numbers and watch his tape. #nobrainer"
Deion Sanders claims Travis Hunter has already clinched Heisman Trophy
Deion Sanders is well known for continuously backing his players, and he did so again following their final regular season victory over Oklahoma State. Here's what he said of Hunter's performance in the 52-0 shutout of the Cowboys:
"Travis clinched the Heisman today with his performance, he’s the best player in college football," Sanders said. "You can find ways to hate, criticize and condemn him and you won’t come out of that looking professional. Travis Hunter proved today, and he’s proved every week, that he is the best player in college football.”
Travis Hunter had 10 receptions against Oklahoma State, accruing 116 yards and three touchdown catches while also contributing an interception on defense.
