2024 Heisman runner-up Ashton Jeanty failed to make an impact during Boise State's college football playoff quarterfinals against the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Broncos, who won the Mountain West championship, succumbed to a 31-14 loss in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, bringing an end to their hopes of competing for the national championship.
Ashton Jeanty, who has been consistent on offense for Boise State, could not help his team overcome James Franklin's defense on the field. The running back finished the game while only tallying 104 rushing yards for 30 carries, falling 27 yards short of breaking Barry Sanders' single-season rushing record set back in 1988 (2,628 yards).
After the disappointing performance from Jeanty, fans took to social media to criticize the Heisman runner-up. One fan said Colorado's Travis Hunter was more deserving of the Heisman than Jeanty:
"Ashton Jeanty is a fraud. Thank God Travis Hunter won that Heisman."
Another fan felt that Jeanty finally showcased his real game against a tough opponent:
"Ashton Jeanty plays a defense that isn't full of future insurance salesman and the reason he didn't win the Heisman is exposed."
One fan said college football fans are finally getting to see that Jeanty is not special and is just an average running back:
"Casual college football fans are finally seeing that Ashton Jeanty shouldn't of won the Heisman. He's just a good running back, nothing special."
Another added that Penn State RB Kaytron Allen played better than the Heisman runner-up:
"I just watched Kayton Allen peform significantly better than Ashton Jeanty."
This fan did not mince words while describing Jeanty's performance in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl against Penn State:
"Ashton Jeanty is an overrated bum"
One fan called Jeanty an overrated player who only has strength and no explosiveness:
"Ashton Jeanty overrated as f**k. Dude is strong and tough to tackle but does not look that fast/explosive in person."
Penn State head coach James Franklin praises D-line for stopping Ashton Jeanty
In the post-game press conference, coach James Franklin opened up about how he and his team have a lot of respect for Jeanty's talent despite his performance in the playoff quarterfinals.
He also went on to praise his defensive line and commended them on doing a good job of thwarting Jeanty's rushing game.
"I think we did corral him. Not 'sort of'. I think we did corral," Franklin said via SI.com. "They got some yards there at the end. And I think defensively, I think our team was sick of me talking about him. I think we got the point across about the respect we have for that young man and the type of running back he is.
"Thought our D-line did a really good job of being disruptive and getting in the backfield. I thought we did a really good job gang-tackling. There were a few times where we didn't wrap like we should have. But for the most part, our defense played lights out," he added.
The Boise State RB still has a year of eligibility left, but is projected to be a top pick in the 2025 NFL draft. It will be interesting to see which team decides to draft and utilize Jeanty's rushing talents in the NFL.
