Ashton Jeanty has been putting up video game numbers for Boise State all season, placing him as one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy.
Jeanty was outstanding again on Saturday, running for three touchdowns and 159 yards on 32 carries to lead No. 13 Boise State's 42-21 win at San Jose State.)
The performance improved Jeanty’s chances of claiming the Heisman Trophy. The running back saw a 25-point boost in his betting line, now standing at +425 odds according to BetMGM. He’s only behind Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter (-500) in the race for the award.
Analyst believes Ashton Jeanty is losing momentum in the Heisman race
ESPN analyst Greg McElroy believes the momentum Ashton Jeanty had earlier in the season in the Heisman Trophy race is no longer the same.
"It does feel like the Heisman conversation for Ashton Jeanty has died down just a little bit," McElroy said in Sunday's installment of “Always College Football with Greg McElroy."
"I still think he's one of the most outstanding players in the country, and if I had to fill out a ballot, he would probably right now be on my ballot, but I don't know if he's going to have the numbers to support candidacy from most of the Heisman voters' pool."
Jeanty led the Heisman race for a couple of weeks after his outstanding performance against Oregon early in the season. Despite remaining on top of his game, he's currently not in the lead for the honor.
Boise State coach remains confident in Ashton Jeanty
While Ashton Jeanty seems to be behind Travis Hunter in the race for the Heisman Trophy, Boise State coach Spencer Danielson continues to believe in the running back. He sees Jeanty as the best player in the nation.
“Guys like Ashton, they’re built for this,” Danielson said after the game against San Jose State. "That’s what they train for, that’s who they are. I tell people when they ask me, ‘Just watch the tape, watch the film, let that decide.’”
Jeanty broke Boise State's single-season rushing record against Boise State. The running back has now hauled 1,893 rushing yards, breaking the previous record of 1,823 yards set by Jay Ajayi in 2014.
