Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty had an incredible campaign this season. He emerged as the runner-up in the Heisman this season behind the winner, Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter, and helped the Broncos win their second consecutive Mountain West Championship.
Ashton Jeanty also helped his team secure a first-round bye in the 12-team playoffs where they faced the Penn State Nittany Lions in the quarterfinals. However, Boise State's dream of competing for the natty came to an end at the hands of the Nittany Lions in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl showdown.
Ashton Jeanty stats vs Penn State in Vrbo Fiesta Bowl
The running back has been consistent for the Broncos in every game throughout the season. Unfortunately for him, James Franklin and his team managed to find a way to defend against his rushing abilities, putting Boise State in the backseat right from the start of the game.
Ashton Jeanty has scored a touchdown in almost every game this season. Even though he managed to tally a decent 104 rushing yards for 30 carries in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, it was far from what we have seen him being capable of on the gridiron.
ASHTON JEANTY STATS IN VRBO FIESTA BOWL:
Things looked good for Boise State to make a comeback in the third quarter when QB Maddux Madsen made a 53-yard TD pass to Matt Lauter to make the score 14-17.
On the other hand, Penn State kept putting offensive pressure which resulted in them increasing the gap by scoring two more touchdowns. Nittany Lions QB Drew Allar finished the night with a total of 171 yards and three touchdowns passing.
Ashton Jeanty falls short of breaking Barry Sanders' single-season rushing record
Back in 1988, ex-NFL star Barry Sanders set the single-season rushing record in college football with 2,628 rushing yards for Oklahoma State. Jeanty needed just 132 yards to break Sanders' record during Boise State's playoff quarterfinal showdown against Penn State.
Even before the game, Sanders took to social media to wish the RB all the best in his attempt to break the rushing record set almost 36 years ago.
"Got my popcorn ready @AshtonJeanty2 - Good Luck!," Sanders wrote on X/Twitter.
Jeanty, who was averaging 192 yards per game, was unsuccessful in breaking the single-season rushing record. With 104 rushing yards against Penn State, the RB fell short by just 27 yards in setting a new collegiate single-season rushing record. He finished the season with a total of 2,601 rushing yards to his name.
